Before getting to the “average” primary dealer (PD) collateral balance sheet, first we’ll go over the difference between rehypothecation versus repledging and whether it matters. In practical terms, it isn’t so much the legal niceties as it is the means for constant circulation and re-circulation of collateral as much as cash. PD balance sheets are the prime source of such money in motion, and in Classroom #26 we’ll get our first hard look at them.
